Field research in traditionally multilingual, multiethnic areas presents researchers with a variety of challenges, including different approaches to religions, traditions, strongly defined social-economic relations, majority-minority relations, and complex and dynamic identity formations. Many of these features differ between ethnic groups, while others are transethnic.
Among the related linguistic manifestations are forms of representation of language (oral and/or written), cultural binding of language use to specific situations, poetic forms. The phenomena of language contact and hybridization play a special role in multilingual regions.
The workshop deals with these questions using the example of the multilingual, multiethnic region of Transylvania especially its rural and mountainous areas. Questions of field access, planning, motivation, self-reflection and methodology will be addressed.
