Call for participation Translation in History – History in Translation Summer School

Summer School

Call for participation

Translation in History – History in Translation Summer School

“Digitizing Translation History: Methods, Tools, and Approaches”

3–6 June 2025

Department of Translation Studies, University of Graz

This year’s summer school will delve into the intersection of translation history and Digital Humanities (DH): participants will explore the potential of DH tools for the study of translation history and will discuss examples of research where such tools and procedures developed in the realm of DH provided essential insights. In particular, the focus will be on methods used to investigate and visualize networks of agents, institutions, and artefacts, translation flows, as well as opportunities to narrate such materials within specific historical contexts. The summer school will provide a comprehensive overview of key DH tools and approaches and explain how they can be applied to research questions in translation history. We will also tackle possible pitfalls of working with DH tools and discuss critical questions they raise for the field.

Sessions on relational databases will equip participants with the skills to structure, manage, and analyze large datasets relevant to translation history, such as historical translation catalogs, correspondences, and bibliographies. A dedicated workshop on the transcription (OCR/HTR) of textual sources will offer guidance on digitizing and analyzing primary historical materials, which will foster discussions on the challenges of working with such sources in digital formats. Additionally, hands-on training in data visualization techniques will be offered to enable participants to represent complex historical data in insightful ways.

Through these workshops, lectures, and interactive discussions, participants will critically engage with how DH can illuminate new dimensions of translation history while also addressing the limitations and implications of digital tools for historical inquiry. This combination of theoretical and practical training will enable participants to reflect upon possibilities to integrate DH tools into their research and tackle complex research questions in innovative ways.

Invited lectures and workshops by

  • Bernhard Bauer (University of Graz)

  • Elisabet Carbó-Catalan (Université de Liège)

  • Diana Roig-Sanz (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya)

These experts will provide theoretical insights and practical training, which will foster dynamic discussions and debates. The program will be complemented by activities organized by the local organizing committee. Participants will also have the opportunity to present their own research projects and will receive feedback in small group settings or individual consultations with our invited speakers and faculty members from the University of Graz’s Department of Translation Studies. The working language of the summer school is English.
