Who we are and what we do
The Department of Translation Studies, or ITAT, is devoted to excellence in research and translator and interpreter education. Translation is understood in the widest possible sense and involves all forms of transcultural and intracultural text production. It includes:
- technical, legal and literary translation
- dubbing and subtitling of films
- software localisation
- technical documentation for different user groups
- conference interpreting
- court interpreting
- community interpreting
for Arabic, Austrian Sign Language, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, English, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Russian, Slovene, Spanish, and Turkish.
Focus on South-Eastern Europe
The Department of Translation Studies contributes to the university’s research focus on South-Eastern Europe, examining linguistic, socio-cultural and historical aspects associated with the region. This focus is reflected both in the languages offered at the Department language offer and its close cooperation with universities in Croatia (Osjek, Zagreb), Hungary (Pécs), Macedonia (Skopje) and Slovenia (Ljubljana, Maribor). Every year, the Department welcomes many students from these countries underlining its reputation as a leading institution for translator and interpreter training.
